Nadkarni Cup is one of the oldest football tournament in India which also has gathered an immense sense of prestige in Mumbai football with top clubs from around the city participating in it. Air India is the defending champions from last year and they will kickstart the tournament when they take on Mumbai Port Trust in the opening fixture today at 1:30 pm at the RCF Ground.
The second match of the day will take place between Century Rayon and the Karnataka Sporting Association (KSA) side at 3:30 pm.
n the last edition of Nadkarni Cup, MDFA Elite Division club Air India beat PIFA Colaba 3-2 to clinch the title in what was their second consecutive finals appearance. In 2016, Air India had fallen short against Mumbai FC in a closely-contested final. Last year, Air India’s Pramod Pandey, Pratik Koli and Aaron D’Costa scored a goal each to secure the win against PIFA Colaba which helped them to emerge as Champions of the Nadkarni Cup.
PIFA Colaba’s Elvis Ozawara won the ‘Player of the tournament’ award for his glowing performances throughout the tournament. Air India will be the favourites to defend their title owing to their success in their ongoing Elite Division season, where they have won all their matches so far.
The teams that will be raring to make Air India work hard for their title defence will be the likes of Union Bank of India, Kenkre FC, Mumbai Customs, Mumbai Strikers, Western Railway, Indian Navy, PIFA Colaba, Central Bank of India, Mumbai Port Trust, Dena Bank, Bank of India, HDFC and Millat FC.
The tournament begins today and will conclude with the final on 17th of February at 3:30 pm.
